Acosta and Aserrí are among the most deteriorated areas of the country, aspect that lead ASOPROAA, a local NGO with 479 members (422 men and 57 women) to look for financing from the “Productive Reconverting”,  a government program.  From this program, 39 small farmers received financing to establish “stabled cattle” with 10 animals each one, as a phase one.  They are going to have 100 small farmers financed by the next year.  Each animal generates 20 kgs. of manure per day, that would mean almost 8 million Kgs. of manure per year as contaminants.

The group received financing from SGP to establish a rotating fund to finance 8 green house constructions to produce organic fertilizer with the manure.   Ounce they are producing, they will give the red worms to another farmer and help him to establish the organic fertilizer initiative, to have more people involved in the project each year.  At the same time, ASOPROAA will be producing 10.000 plants annually to give them to reforest and protect the most deteriorated areas, and mainly ground water recharge areas, with local species and fruit trees for birds.  The fertilizer will be used by the same farms for the crops they have, that will be transformed to organic agriculture.
